Sing Out Loud for All to Hear

Friday was a beautiful day in Los Angeles, yet  our hearts were weeping, breaking, questioning.

On Saturday, I was not looking forward to caroling with the Glee Club round about Silverlake, but I went and I sang. We lifted our voices in joyous song and I cried and cried. There were about 60 of us, families, friends and lots of little ones in Santa hats.

We sang to the Dogs in the Dog Park. They loved us.

We went in LA MILL, and sang Silent Night with the customers. It was off key magic.

It helped to get the following e-mail of encouragement on Saturday morning from our fearless Choir director,

Sara Jan ( we call her SJ)

“I also want to say, that yesterday I sang in  a Candlelight Ceremony down at Disneyland, which at first seemed off, and I could not hold back the tears during “What Child is This.”  However, the magic of music happened, and brought together, at least for the night, hundreds of hurting and confused people. Tonight, music and singing are the most appropriate way to come together.  With that, I leave you with Leonard Bernstein’s famous quote,

“This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”

Rise up.

PS –  the big show is tonight.  Come Sing a long at the Bootleg,  you will catch nothing but love.

Happy New Year Inspiration from Woody Guthrie

Perhaps it’s uncool to love Facebook, but I love it. Last week on Democracy Uprising this amazing journal page from Woody Guthrie Circa 1942 made the ticker tape.

If you know me, you know I love to journal. His classic entries with New Year’s Resolution  comittment warm my heart; ” stay glad, make up your mind, wake up and fight!”  I’m a big fan of resolutions, I think it’s good to have a mantra everyday – this year mine is ” finish what you start.”

Naturally, I was so charmed by Mr. Guthrie’s  two page spread that I had to make my own.

Thanks for sharing world, I love you (and you too facebook)!  Happy New Year!

Earth Month Wrap Up

Yes, it’s true. I didn’t post a single entry for the month of April.  I did however, have lots of fun, it being my birthday month and all.  Highlights include hanging out with  Jamie Oliver the day he announced the chocolate milk news and Christina at LA  Parent wrote a nice piece about what I do for fun (try to save the world, through food). Stay tuned for a great chocolate cookie recipe and a few wedding reviews.  We’ve been busy!

Mystery Lunch Box 2011 Begins Today!

It’s that time of year again – time to rattle those pots and pans! One of the final events of the year for Rootdown LA is the Mystery Lunch box competition.  it’s a  series of three classes where highs choolers  learn the fine art of saute   and the versatility of whole foods and healthy cookery.  5 teams make three recipes each week featuring whole foods – today, it’s corn, potatoes, white beans,  greens and zucchini.

All my chef friends come and mentor the kids, and the class ends in a cook-off.  The winning team is  awarded prizes (everybody gets a prize, don’t worry)  and every participant walks away with life skills and a new found confidence in the kitchen.

Final project - Corn fritters with White bean Salad

It’s a fabulous after school program and big thanks to Root Down LA and Kelley Budding of Jefferson High for  supporting the future of America eating well.

everybody eats well at the MLB challenge!

Roots of Change can Party!

What a great night  - chefs everywhere! Great wine, exceptional food and desserts!  It was the kick- off  party  Aptly titled “Good  Food for All -Celebrating the Los Angeles Food Shed”  which started the  Network  Summit this week: Healthy Food and Farms by 2030.

Chefs! The  room was radiant  with the energy of these sumptous local foods, appreciated by a room full of dedicated eaters and advocates for a cleaner food system. We were giddy with  delight. Even the Mayor gets it. Hopes were high and the rumble of forthcoming change was palpable. It’s happening people, it’s happening!

The Good Food for All Agenda - creating a regional food system for all of  Los Angeles is available on line at Roots of Change. The party was magnificent with  every  noble and worthy  local chef in attendance, or presenting.  ( I got to hug my hero Suzanne Goin)

This brown sugar peach tart  was amazing.

The setting was stupendous. Vibiana is rumored to be a restaurant soon, created by the mastermind behind Grace, Neil Fraser.  I think we should combine our strength and  I should run the event department.  I’d like that!

All my garden peeps were there. My personal favorites of course; Warren from Root Down LA and Julia from Garden School Foundation. Also in attendance, Lisa Lucas Los  Angeles Slow Food Warrior and Amelia Saltsman , author of  The Santa Monica Farmers Market Cookbook .

There’s just one thing… Could we please have a dialogue about all those disposable plates?

Big Pharma is Screwing with the Salmon

When will it end?  We need to protect our seafood (and maybe eat a little less, right?)  Genetically engineered salmon will soon be your if we don’t take action.

Please sign the petition and post on  your social accounts.   I wonder if our first lady knows about this?

Here’s the link to  the petition here to stop GE (genetically engineered) salmon. If you don’t who will?  Doesn’t it scare you just a little?  Keep it WILD people!

I’m coordinating the schedule for Garden School this year and looking for chefs!  Sessions are 4 days a week (but you only need to teach one day a week)  in the morning.  Two one hour sessions culminate into a  second breakfast for the kids using the foraged food from the garden.

LAUSD STOPS TYSON CONTRACT

WOW. This is how it all started: check out item number 5. (also pasted it at the bottom of this entry) You will find upon careful reading, listed with the janitorial supplies, cabling and stationary,  the LAUSD food budget  is listed as cafeteria supplies, food processing and miscellaneous food products. (sounds delicious doesn’t it?)  And deeper still in this less than transparent budget  are the contracts for the protein and potato providers; Don Lee Farms for beef in California, Jennie-O turkey in  Minnesota, McCain Potatoes in Illinois and Tyson Foods for chicken in Arkansas. These 4 contracts total $$$ 284,450,000. dollars a year for our kids’ breakfast and lunch.

Now, take away Tyson -  which the board voted to do after  our intelligent and  emotional pleas  and concern over labor practices. This is stated in the board minutes:  “Amended to withdraw Procurement Services Division Contract No. 1100124 Tyson Foods, Inc.”

…and it looks  like  NOW there’s some wiggle room in the budget!

How about supporting the California economy with some of those dollars? How about some healthy whole foods in school lunches – don’t you see Mr LAUSD it’s not working! Processed food from other states is a waste of  time, energy and  most of all is hurtful to the health of our kids.

Now is a great time to  bust a move! So that’s what we’re gonna do. Please join us… more to come.

This is how the food budget is partially listed:
